Hi! My name is Mackenzie Atkinson. I attended Western Carolina University and earned Bachelor’s Degrees in political science and communication with a concentration in journalism. I started this podcast as part of an independent study with my professor Dr. Katerina Sposovska.
I started getting into political reporting my junior year of high school when I took AP Political Science and wrote for my school newspaper, The Eclipse, at the same time. I learned about the Watergate Scandal and saw how journalist make real different in the world just through educating and watching those in power.
My interest in politics goes farther back than just 2019 and 2020.
After my dad retired from the Marine Corps, my family moved to Flint, Michigan around 2013. Not even two years after moving to the Great Lake State the Flint Water Crisis hit the headlines. The role journalists played in uncovering the coverup and holding officials accountable inspired me.
I hope to explain politics in a way that everyone can understand. Many people I’ve talked to say that trying to learn about everything that is going on in politics is overwhelming. I’m trying to simplify it.
